“I had no idea of the character. But the moment I was dressed, the clothes and the make-up made me feel the person he was. I began to know him, and by the time I walked onto the stage he was fully born.”
Charlie Chaplin
Coming from a theater background I can see the similarities between what Charlie Chaplin says and what God says to us in Colossians 3:1-17. God has given us a new wardrobe so to speak. He has given us a brand new attire to clothe ourselves with consisting of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience & love. We just need to throw out our old clothes (greed, anger, lust, evil desires, malice, sexual immorality, unclean language, etc.).
We may fear not knowing exactly who we are or will be after we throw out the “old self” (our old clothes)…but by putting on the “new self” (our new clothes from God) and then walking around in them for a bit will we will as Charlie puts it, “begin to know him (or her) and by the time we walk out onto the stage (the world) we will be fully born (our true selves as God created us to be).” Words in parenthesis are my interpretation. : )
Lenten practices for today…
Give in – to God’s invitation to put on His new attire…tailored just for you…that will have you become the person you were created to be. In this case the “clothes” really do “make the man/woman”. : )
Give up – the desire to hang onto any of your former attire. Clean out those closets once and for all today!!
Give out – forgiveness to those that have brought hurt or pain to you or someone you care about.
