Family Root Issues

Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him… But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:1-6

This scripture is part of the prophetic promise of Jesus the Messiah… the root of our faith. This root metaphor is packed with wisdom… Let’s dig in to just one element of that wisdom.

When a root grows in healthy soil the root has a lot to be grateful for… when the soil is dry the root lives by another source… soil doesn’t get the credit.  Nobody has a root system like Jesus.  Read about the crazy gypsies, tramps and thieves that are in Jesus’ natural family roots (Matthew 1:1-17).  You think you’ve got root issues!

Not only does Jesus come from fallen human beings (on the human side of His roots), but when we receive His saving love He takes our wounds, pain, iniquity, our straying, our root system issues… He receives our punishment and grafts us into His divine family roots. Totally changes our root system.  The root system of forgiveness, healing, peace…  you name the need, it is found in Jesus’ family root system. Does your root system still look like the broken family system of this world or the unhealthy part of your family of origin? How does your root system reflect your connection to Jesus?

Some ways to grow in a healthy root system:

  • Thank Jesus for His grafting you in to His root system.
  • Ask Him to forgive the ways you are still living by the old family systems.
  • Meet with a trusted spiritual friend or leader and discuss how you might grow in healthy spiritual practices to strengthen your roots.
  • Join a small group or class that helps nourish your roots.
  • Worship with other faith family members every Sunday to fertilize your roots and connect with the bigger root system of God’s family.

Connected to and praying for you,
