Check Your Roots…

Pastor Clare by a Redwood
“They don’t have deep roots, so they don’t last very long. As soon as life gets hard or the message gets them in trouble, they give up.” Matt. 13:21(CEV)

A few years ago we were in a redwood forest in California.  We were overwhelmed by the size of the redwood and sequoia trees.  These skyscraper trees can grow to be 350 feet tall and their roots go 6-12 feet deep, spreading out 50-80 feet.  These babies have some serious “rootage”!  Their roots are intermingled with other tree’s roots which keep them from tipping over.  They need each other!

Compare that to the tumbleweed.  Tumbleweeds put down one very shallow root. Never connect with other living things are easily uprooted when the wind blows.

Contrast a tumbleweed plant with a redwood tree. In almost three decades of ministry we have met Redwoods and Tumbleweeds.  The tumbleweed believers don’t need the church; don’t need to be connected to stronger believers to receive strength… or weaker believers to share their strength. The redwood types put down lots of roots and these roots are deeply connected to God and others which is why at 250-350 feet they don’t blow over or topple over.  These trees stay strong when winds blow because of their root structure.

Check your roots.  See how you can deepen your faith connection with other believers this week.  Stronger believers and weaker believers… come on now– “root up“!  If you’re in town join us live for Radical Discipleship – rooted follower-ship… out of town join us on the web.  We want to help strengthen your roots.

BLESSED are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep… Jer. 17:7 (NLT)
