In 1970 my (Clare) family survived a fire, and I received a book from my dad with this inscription, “Let this book remind you of a merry and holy Christmas.”
This year we are experiencing Christmas for the first time without all four of our parents. The birth of Christ was central to our parents’ celebrations. Scott’s mom delighted in the squeals of children opening the special gifts she chose. Clare’s dad guided the family in prayer and song; all four parents prioritized gathering in faith, hope, and love. As old as we are, we feel like orphans and grieve the loss of their presence here and celebrate the gift of Christ they gave us.
We have survived many metaphorical fires in 2021 (2020, too!) Some Christmases are “merry and holy” because we survived, and Christ is still our reason to celebrate. May Christ’s birth open unto you a way to view your challenges, grief, and hope for the world!
We wish you a merry and holy Christmas.
Scott and Clare
“There were shepherds camping in the neighborhood. They had set night watches over their sheep. Suddenly, God’s angel stood among them and God’s glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David’s town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you’re to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger.”
At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God’s praises:
Glory to God in the heavenly heights,
Peace to all men and women on earth who please him.”
