Turn Sideways Into the Light (But not That Sideways)

Turn Sideways Into the Light
“Turn sideways into the light as they say
the old ones did and disappear
into the originality of it all.”
—David Whyte
So, we’ve been getting some questions lately. And by questions, I mean retirement rumors wrapped in polite curiosity:
“When are you retiring?”
(asked almost once a week)
“Is this your last wedding?”
(asked last Saturday as we finished officiating Taylor and Kyles wedding!—gotta love the timing)
Real subtle, folks. Real subtle.
Now, if we were the thin-skinned type, we might be offended. But we’re living in the laugh track of it all. It’s like getting mistaken for someone famous—or at least someone older, richer, and permanently on a beach in Florida.
Here’s the truth:
Nearly two years ago, I (Clare) gave up my full-time pastor salary. Not because we were coasting into the sunset, but because we wanted to make space—financial and otherwise—for the next generation of pastors. Did I cut my hours? Please. I’m still working like Jesus is coming back this afternoon and wants progress reports (but still have my rhythms of rest).
But did it free up resources to include some younger pastoral voices?
Heck yes.
Scott and I are out here living our God-given life, pouring into leaders who are lighting up the world—in pulpits, classrooms, clinics, and coffee shops. We’re still serving at Crossroads, coaching, offering spiritual direction, leading retreats, teaching the Enneagram, and occasionally showing up at weddings (even if people think it’s our swan song).
So, are we ready to “turn sideways into the light”?
Not unless the light is coming from a really good reading lamp and there’s a stack of books and a glass of wine under it. But who knows? God has a way of surprising us with that whole “originality” thing.
In the meantime, we’re not disappearing—we’re doubling down. Still sharing Christ with every breath. Still showing up for the work. Still laughing our way through the holy and the ordinary.
So come find us—
On retreat (June 3–6). In a certification class (also June 3–6).
At the communion table every Sunday at Crossroads.
Or at a wedding. (And no, it’s probably not our last one 😉)
With love, grit, and a belly laugh,
Clare and Scott
