Advent and the Enneagram Patient Presence


Lectionary Reading from the Blue Book =) Luke 12:35-48 & Psalm 85

Yes, the Eternal will plant goodness in the earth,
    and our land will yield great abundance.
Justice will come before God,
    marking out a path, setting a way for God’s feet.
Psalm 85:12-13

How patient are you?

Dr. King said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, and it bends toward justice.” Prudentius said, “patience is a virtue.” Chardin invites us to “trust in the slow work of God.” I am not naturally patient, are you? I need to surround myself with slow and methodical people to help rewire my brain because left to my own devices; I can move at break-neck speed.


Matt Blossom, An Enneagram Five, is such a person. Whether he’s “intentionally roasting” coffee or skillfully constructing, his patience is indeed a virtue. He recently lost his mom and brother during the pandemic. While Matthew is dominantly a head-center type, he practiced patience with his emotional world. His story is profoundly moving. Let his transforming presence bring you patience and grace.

Type 5:God is Wisdom. FIVES embody God’s wisdom and cerebral intensity. 

FIVES, when they are living led by the Holy Spirit personify Sacred Knowing. They can concentrate and focus on developing complex ideas and skills. Holy and innovative FIVES gain knowledge and can share that knowledge with empathy and action. Integrated FIVES are individualistic, not driven by social pressure but instead attuned to the needs of society. Because they are alert and insightful, they can bring patient wisdom to unfair situations. Transforming FIVES detach from their detachment, observe, empathize, and use knowledge to act justly. As patient, methodical, visionary pioneers, they are often ahead of their time and able to see the world in an entirely new way. When they are led by Divine Wisdom, Love, and Justice, they bring God’s Kingdom to earth. These FIVES show us God’s Wisdom attaches to the needs of humanity. Transforming/discerning FIVES show us “God’s wisdom loves justly.” 

Practice Welcoming Presence

  • Be patient with you heart
  • Practice opportunities (like Matt wearing his brother’s coat) to engage your emotions
  • Choose ways to engage with groups that can benefit from your empathic-wisdom and strategic activism 
  • Centering prayer 
  • Take a creative course to engage your body and emotions

We are quite naturally impatient in everything to reach the end without delay.
We should like to skip the intermediate stages.
We are impatient of being on the way to something unknown, something new.

your ideas mature gradually—let them grow,
let them shape themselves, without undue haste.
Don’t try to force them on,
as though you could be today what time
(that is to say, grace and circumstances acting on your own good will)
will make of you tomorrow.

Only God could say what this new spirit
gradually forming within you will be.

that his hand is leading you,
and accept the anxiety of feeling yourself
in suspense and incomplete.
